Prayer Band

The Prayer Band of Christ the King Anglican Church in Ridgeland Park Nassau Bahamas was founded in March 1972 by Sister Barbara Rahming. Some of its founding members were Sister Sheila Bannister, Sister Leah O'Brien, Sister Olga Lockhart and Sister Evelyn Cooper. Of these, the only remaining active member is Sister Leah O'Brien.

The Prayer Band meets every Thursday at the Church, and the words, 'where two or three are gathered in my name, I am in the midst to bless", become real. The organization grew, and in a short time, the late Sister Della Knowles succeeded Sister Rahming who heeded the Master's call to build up the programme in other parishes. Because of the solemn season of Lent, the celebration of the Prayer Band's anniversary was moved down to the last Thursday in April. Under the leadership of Sister Della, the Prayer Band went from strength to strength; and upon her death in 1984, Sister Majorie Thompson succeeded her. The group, which consists of all ladies, continues to work hard. Sister Inez Frazer became president in the late 1980's and upon her untimely death a year later, Sister Majorie Thompson resumed the position of president, until the present time.

There are about 24 active members in the organization. The officers are as follows:

Officers

President Sister Marjorie Thompson
Vice President Sister Mazie Poitier
Secretary Sister Pearl Adderley
Asst. Secretary Sister Edna Laverity
Treasurer Sister Rosalie Minus
Asst. Treasurer Sister Leah O'Brien
Executive Members Sister Delores Cooper Sister Agnes Cartwright
  Sister Beverley Smith

The ultimate goal of the Prayer Band is to visit the sick, bereaved and shut-in, to help persons in time of need, to build up the life and work of the church and to grow spiritually through prayer, praise, worship and the words of God (Bible study).

Our objectives are:

  • To meet every Thursday for bible study and worship
  • To visit the sick, bereaved and shutins of the parish
  • To hold various fundraising in order to assist the Church with cash donations for on going projects.
  • To send donations of cash, food, flowers or fruits to the needy.

Currently we have just a few projects. They are:

  • Prepare meals for the boys at Colby House (home for homeless boys) on a quarterly basis.
  • Deliver gift baskets to the sick and shut-ins
  • Contribute to the Diocese 2000 and beyond
  • Annual Souse Out
